Passo Fundo
They say that Passo Fundo (literally "deep step", pronounced PAH-soh FOON-doh) is the most Gaucho city in Rio Grande do Sul. The city is located to the northwest of Caxias do Sul. Passo Fundo has a strong legacy of art and culture, in fact, since 1981, the ciy has hosted the National Journey of Literature that occurs every two years. The International Folklore Festival showcases artistic performances from throughout the region with attendees from Brazil and the world. The city is also the birthplace of Gaucho music and the Centers of Gaucho Traditions. Wearing "bombacha" Gaucho pants is almost required in this city in rural Rio Grande do Sul. You will see Gauchos in full dress shopping, working and walking through the streets. Before visiting Passo Fundo, try learning some of the local words from the "Gaucho Dialect" page in the "Tourism" section. |
